The two Cloudways products:

Flexible is the traditional Cloudways model. You choose a server, manage scaling, and host unlimited sites. Best for predictable workloads and multi-site operators. Starts at $14/mo.

Autonomous is the newer Kubernetes-based product. It auto-scales resources based on traffic, charges usage-based pricing, and requires no server decisions. Best for traffic spikes, flash sales, and sites where you cannot predict load. Visits are unmetered.

Cloudways Flexible: The Server-Based Model

Flexible is what most people mean when they say "Cloudways hosting." You select a cloud provider (DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS, or Google Cloud), choose a server size, and deploy WordPress applications on it. You pay a fixed monthly rate for the server regardless of traffic.

How pricing works: You pay per server, billed hourly but settled monthly. A DigitalOcean Premium 1GB server costs $14/mo. A 4GB server costs $54/mo. You can host unlimited WordPress sites on each server as long as the resources handle the load. No visit counting, no traffic overages on DO/Vultr/Linode.

What you manage: Server sizing decisions (when to upgrade or downgrade), WordPress core and plugin updates, and scaling decisions during traffic growth. Cloudways handles the server stack (OS, Nginx, Varnish, PHP-FPM, MySQL), security patches, and monitoring.

Best for: Agencies hosting multiple client sites (per-site cost of $3-8 at scale), developers comfortable with server-level decisions, WooCommerce stores on a budget ($54/mo with free Object Cache Pro on 4GB+), and anyone who wants predictable monthly hosting costs without traffic-based billing.

For detailed pricing across all cloud providers, see the Cloudways pricing guide. For the DigitalOcean vs Vultr decision, see the server provider comparison.

Cloudways Autonomous: The Auto-Scaling Model

Autonomous launched in 2024 and was restructured with new pricing in November 2025. It runs on Kubernetes infrastructure with automatic resource scaling. You do not choose a server or manage capacity. The platform handles scaling up during traffic surges and scaling down when demand drops.

How pricing works (post-November 2025): You subscribe to a plan with a defined baseline of resources (dedicated Kubernetes pods). When traffic exceeds baseline capacity, additional pods spin up automatically and you pay per-hour charges for the extra capacity. Visits are unmetered and never billed. Storage costs $0.04/GB. Billing is hourly.

What is included: Cloudflare Enterprise CDN with edge caching, Object Cache Pro with Relay, Redis caching, and automatic SSL. These are included in every Autonomous plan at no extra cost. On Flexible, you would pay separately for Cloudflare Enterprise CDN ($4.99/site) and only get Object Cache Pro free on 4GB+ servers.

What you manage: Very little. WordPress updates (unless you pay for SafeUpdates). Application configuration. Content. Autonomous handles infrastructure, scaling, caching, and CDN. It is closer to the Kinsta/WP Engine experience than to Flexible.

Best for: Ecommerce stores with flash sales or seasonal spikes. Content sites that occasionally go viral. Membership sites with enrollment surges. Any site where traffic is unpredictable and you cannot size a server in advance. Sites where paying more during peak traffic is acceptable to avoid paying for unused capacity during quiet periods.

Which One Fits Your Site

Your Situation Best Cloudways Product
Agency hosting 10+ client sites Flexible. Unlimited sites per server. Predictable cost. Best per-site economics.
Steady-traffic business site Flexible. Fixed monthly cost. No scaling surprises. Size the server to your baseline needs.
WooCommerce store with flash sales Autonomous. Auto-scales during sales events. You pay more during spikes but the site stays fast.
Content site that occasionally goes viral Autonomous. Handles traffic surges without manual intervention or pre-provisioning.
Developer wanting server-level access Flexible. SSH, server configuration, multiple cloud providers. Autonomous is application-level only.
Non-technical owner wanting hands-off Autonomous. Fewer decisions than Flexible. But consider Kinsta or WP Engine for a more fully managed experience.
Budget is the primary constraint Flexible. $14/mo entry. Autonomous baseline plans start higher.
